Malton entertained a strong Selby side for their first game of the season. Right from the kick off Malton pounded the Selby line with strong running from Marcus Britlan and Jack Lund.

The Selby pack managed to turn the pressure around and, in spite of solid defence, Selby converted the pressure into points with a converted try from a penalty. Malton quickly turned the game around by Ashley Clark making a good run to the try line to score a try. Before half time Selby managed to score twice more despite spirited play from Malton.

Malton started the second half well with an exciting break from Hamish Taylor and James Zillesen which lead to a outstanding team try which Will Fawcett finished off with Danny Smillie adding the extras.

Selby answered with a converted try of their own. The second half was marred by reckless play from the Selby scrum half who repeatedly stamped on Hamish Taylor’s neck.

The team wishes Hamish a quick recovery from an incident which should not have happened. Selby scored three more tries; the score does not reflect Malton’s performance which was an encouraging start to the season.

Malton travelled to Huddersfield with a injury blighted team for their first round cup match.

Huddersfield got off to a good start with two early converted tries. Malton immediately fought back with a strong attack down the field, which lead to Ashley Clark scrambling over to get a try back for Malton.

However YMCA's dominance showed towards the end of the half and despite some hard tackles going in from the Malton defence, YMCA piled on the pressure and scored one more try to end the half 19-5.

YMCA again started well with another try early on which put the pressure on Malton. From this point, Malton turned the game around. After a trademark run in try from Danny Smillie Malton surged on the attack.

The Malton pack dominated the home team pack with impressive rucking and mauling which let John Lumley bowl over for a try. Malton then did everything they could to try and get another score however YMCA held Malton off for the win. Malton were unfortunate not to go through to the second round but can now look to progress in the Yorkshire Plate competition.

Malton visited Bridlington following disappointment in the Yorkshire Cup and with a number of injuries forcing positional changes in the team. Immediately after receiving the ball from the kick off Malton ventured into the Brid half, Malt played with gritty determination and put the home team under considerable pressure.

Then in a scrum close to the Bridlington line Malt won the ball against the head, Ashley Clark ran across the front of the home cover and delivered a long pass to the wing, after a brief ruck George McGrath collected the ball to run in for a try.
After the restart Malt again went on the attack and were soon only a few metres from the tryline.

Following a scrum Will Fawcett took the ball and shrugged off tackles before setting Freddie Foxley free to run over beneath the posts. Ollie Denton converted easily.
The game had begun to follow a pattern, the Malton pack were able to win the ball from ruck and maul as well as from set pieces regardless of the benefit of throw or put in.

The only area where Malton struggled was the maul, Brid set up several driving mauls which processed ominously towards the Malton line. Malt’s defence was strong enough to prevent a score and thwart the juggernaut. With the ball in hand the Malton backs were fast and incisive and cut a swathe through the home defences.

Fielding a Brid attempt to reach touch Jack Lund, on the wing, collected the ball from a lucky bounce and rampaged through the Bridlington half, and several tackles, towards the line to score an impressive virtuoso try. The teams turned round with the score at 17 – 0 in favour of the visitors.

The second half followed the pattern of the first, Malt were able to play attractive flowing rugby, winning ball through hard effort and involving all the backs in attack. Soon James Goodall scored after Brid had won a lineout within their 22, Ollie again converted. Later Ashley Clark made a run from the base of a scrum on half way, he passed to Freddie who ran inside then sent the ball along the back line for Sam Spaven to score a sparkling try. Then following another exciting movement along the line Ollie Denton ran over and despite receiving a high tackle touched down, Danny Smillie added the extras.

Malt were in firm control of the match and were able to add to the score, George McGrath ran over once more, this time at the end of a delightful move involving all the backs with some deft handling. The final score was another try, this time from Ollie, who collected an up and under and darted over the line to touch down. The final score was 48 nil to Malton.

Malton had a superb game and played scintillating rugby, all members of the team worked hard and deserved the win. Brid were worthy opponents and kept battling until the final whistle.

YORKS PLATE BRIDLINGTON

Report by Tim Wise Yorkshire Plate 1st round
Malton & Norton U16s 29 Bridlington U16s 10

After their early exit in the Yorkshire cup Malton started their Yorkshire plate campaign with high expectations.

Bridlington attacked the Malton line from the start and due to some early mistakes from the Malton defenc, the Bridlington stand-off made a strong run to the line to make Bridlington’s first score.

Malton woke up after this and reacted with strong attack and after continuous pressure James Zillesen crossed over for the first of Malton’s tries, converted by Ollie Denton. This was followed shortly by Hamish Taylor who also crossed over for a try. This impressive half from Malton continued and after some thumping tackles Jack Lund bowled over for a try, which was converted by Denton.

Malton scored once more before the interval through Zillesen which was followed by a try from Bridlington.

From the whistle Bridlington dominated the second half through impressive forward play which Malton found hard to escape from. Malton found one opportunity to score through Danny Smillie, which he took with an impressive run to the line.

After some exiting running from William Wainwright the game drew to a close after a good performance from both teams.

Malton & Norton 27 v 20 Bridlington

Malton entertained Bridlington for the third fixture this season between the two teams. The Malton team were expecting to have an easy passage after their dominance in the pack last week but were soon brought back to reality by a vigorous and physical Brid forward outfit. The first exciting move of the game came from Marcus Britland who charged forward from a scrum and advanced to within inches of the Brid line. Brid’s defence was equal to the pressure brought to bear.

The first score came from Malton following a run down the right flank by Oli Denton, Sean Emms in support collected the ball to score a good try. Shortly after a catalogue of fumbles in defence, following a hopeful kick forward by the visitors, led to a gift try to equal the score. Brid advanced but Marcus Britland took the ball from his own 10 metre line to hare down the field, shirking tackles and outrunning chasers, to score a stirring individual try. Later, from a good attacking scrum position on the Brid 22, Ben Ainley ran a very good line to cross over and touch down near the posts, Oli Denton added the extra points. At half time Malt looked well set with the score at 17 –5.

Straight after the restart Bridlington set up a good attack and scored a try. As a result of this the home side seemed to lose their way a bit, the Brid team became more aggressive and lurked around the boundaries of the laws around the scrum. Malton responded with some fine play, the pack set off on a wonderful surging move down the left flank, the spectators were treated to some delightful handling, notably by Sean Emms, and Danny Smillie was on hand to score.

Danny Smillie then managed to outdo the feat of Marcus, he intercepted a ball, barely 5m from his tryline, and raced full pelt down the length of the pitch to score. In the closing minutes of the game, with the game seemingly won, Malt contrived to offer the visitors a ray of hope. Brid scored a try after a 5m scrum and then, to exacerbate the spectators’ nerves, set up a driving maul to score another try.

The game finished with Malt the winners 27-20. The pack was a disappointment but the backs were able to shine enough to defeat the opposition.

Roundhegians 24 v 17 Malton & Norton
Away

The under 16’s travelled to Roundhegians for a return game, Malt discovered earlier in the season that ‘Hegians were a well-organised and able side capable of living with the best. From the kick off both sides made tentative attacks and play was confined between the 22 metre lines.

Then a hopeful kick from defence by the home team bounced wickedly close to the touchline, a superfast Hegians winger raced in and collected the ball to score a freak try. Soon after Malt were penalised for offside and gave a kickable chance to the home side which was competently taken. Malt kept plugging away and soon set up a fine move down the left flank, the forwards linked well and marched toward the line, close to the line Marcus Britland passed the ball to Oli Denton who touched down. The first half was characterised by Malt making silly mistakes, giving away the ball when going into contact and allowing the referee to award numerous penalties for questionable errors.

Soon after the start of the second half Oli was injured and of course the balance of the Malt was affected. Hegians won a scrum close to the line and scored. At 17-5 Malt were up against it but, in adversity, found some of their best rugby. They bore down relentlessly on the home line and came close on several occasions but fell short.

Then from a quickly taken penalty Will Fawcett received the ball and gratefully ran over. Another try came soon after, this was close to the posts and the conversion attempt was charged down under dubious circumstances. The game was in the balance at 17 points each with time running out. Roundhegians mounted an attack down the right wing, following a lucky interception, and claimed a try.

The referee was fully 40 metres away from the action but dutifully ambled over, after what seemed an age he awarded a try, which was converted by the home kicker, then he blew for full-time and the match was over. Defeat had been snatched from the jaws of victory.

Malt played passionately in the second half and deserved better
