After a frosty start to the day with two
scheduled boys matches being
cancelled, a good crowd of supporters stayed down to watch the first
ever competitive girls rugby match at The Gannock on Sunday 17th
February.
Malton started off well with some good passing in the backs enabling
team captain Rachi Lund, playing at Full Back to exploit the gaps and
run in her first try of the match. Poppy Scott used her blistering pace
to easily outrun the Lichfield defence on the right wing and score
under the uprights enabling Fly half Ellie Raines to easily convert it.
Lichfield's pack managed to rumble towards their try line and Carys
Williams scored their only try of the game. After a Lichfield kick,
Rachi Lund gathered up the ball and sped down the right wing from deep
inside Malton's half, easily outrunning the opposition and scoring her
second try of the afternoon.
Malton's tackling was committed and at times quite destructive towards
the Lichfield attacking forwards, Tatyana Heard, Ellie Raines and Becky
Waites being the pick of the tacklers. Ashleigh McDowell following in
her Dad's footsteps as hooker along with No 8 Sarah Clough kept the
pack together.
Player of the match was scrum half Bianca Blackburn who gave a great
performance. Both the home and visiting supporters thoroughly enjoyed
their afternoon's rugby commenting on the levels of committment and
skills shown by the girls. All in all an excellent performance for the
girls and one which they can be immensely proud of.
